Background
In recent years Bihar has shown remarkable improvement in the field of healthcare. In keeping with this trend, the government has initiated the Swastha Bihar campaign. In its first leg, the month long Swasthya Chetna Yatra (Health Awareness Drive) was launched on 26th January 2011 with the ambitious plan to hold around 10,101 health camps in all the Primary Health Centers, Additional Primary Health Centers and Health Sub Centers. These camps will address health care issues like sanitation, immunization, institutional delivery, breast feeding, alcoholism, smoking, ensuring availability of medicines to the masses, etc.

Janani's Role
Since Bihar has the highest fertility rate (3.9) in the country according to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS 3), the state health department has prioritizing family planning as a means to stabilize population growth among the large number of people in the reproductive age group. Family planning is an essential tool to reduce fertility rate and an increased use of contraception would result in the reduction of population growth.

Since lack information and access to these services have been the biggest barriers, these problems are being addressed by family planning counseling corners at these camps. The state government has invited Janani to participate in the Yatra and support the camps by setting up family planning counseling corners at the Government Health Sub-Centers and the Additional Primary Health Centers. These family planning counseling corners at the Swasthya Chetna Yatra are being conducted by Surya Suvidha Kendra(SSKs) representatives to provide counseling on family planning. They provide information on the various methods of family planning and refer clients to the nearest government or accredited private facility..Clinics. At the counseling corners, information brochures and referral forms are given out to clients interested in adopting family planning methods. Tools such as flip charts are used to educate the people. Information brochures and leaflets are being distributed.. Special leaflets are given out to the Accredited Social Health Associates (ASHAs) who visit the stall.

Through these special FP corners the aim is to

  • Increase the uptake of Family Planning services at both public and private health centers through counseling
  • Interact with clients, identify and counsel couples with unmet need for family planning, and familiarize clients with the concept of Surya Suvidha Kendra in their block
  • Increase its network of motivators and the provider by interacting with and enlisting the Accredited Social Health Associates (ASHAs) interested in the program - It is anticipated that the camps will be attended by Anganwadi Workers, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives, MAMTA workers, Doctors, Nurses, and approximately 80,000 ASHAs.
