The outreach rural net work of Janani well known as the Surya Health Promoters is an indispensable network for Janani in its operation of family planning service delivery and marketing interventions. Janani Surya Health Promoters are listed community animators instrumental in mobilizing the clientele base to augment the acceptance of the much needed family planning services amidst the Community members in Bihar and Jharkhand.
The marketing network of Janani comprises the redistribution stockist and retailer sellers of the Surya range of products and promoters of the Surya clinics. The present Surya health promoters' network is involved informally in to health care services delivery at the community level and its strength is roughly 9000. Through a modular 2 days training program organized at the zonal headquarters, Janani aims to reach out to the available group of eligible couples in need of family planning services. The training program aims at enhancing the communication and soft skills of the existing outreach network, thus empowering them to contribute better in client mobilization at the community level.
For the successful implementation of this large scale training program Janani has coupled with Agragami India, a renowned resource centre for training programs in the field of Reproductive and Child Health in Bihar. The training program is carried out at seven zonal Surya Clinics of Janani based at Patna, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Muzzaferpur, Motihari, Purnea and Ranchi. The training program envisages a participatory approach towards imparting training and know how on unwanted pregnancy and types of contraception methods, and provide support to clients to choose an apt family planning service for delaying, limiting or spacing, as per their need . Emphasis on post service follow up and support required to the client is also a part of the training program. The last topic is on the safe abortion services available at the Surya Clinics. All session have been designed, with most of participation, case studies and group work from the participants and self realisation from the outcomes of the participative discussions. The training and its evaluation based on pre-training and post- training question sets, is facilitated by a set of 16 experienced trainers stationed at the zonal districts.
The very first step of the training process was to orient the core team of Zonal managers, district level managers and the frontline project coordinators on the training objective and contents. Thereafter the module was pretested with small groups of the SHPs. A training calendar for each zonal headquarter namely Gaya, Bhagalpur, Patna, Muzafferpur, Motihari, Purnea and Ranchi been prepared. The training will be carried out in batches of 25 SHPs, thrice a week, and begins from Mid-November 2010.
